PRESS STATEMENT ON “POWER 2” CRACKDOWN21st October, Prague
/ Today, early in the morning, another part of political order was completed: “POWER” crackdown number 2. The police raid was focused mainly on representatives of opposition party “Dělnická Strana” (Workers´ Party) and even family members or partners of the detained were not saved from the repression. Interestingly enough, the arrestment touched primarily those who were drawing attention to wrongful acts of the police during the first “Power” crackdown in June.About “Power” crackdown On 10th June 2009, police special forces brutally broke into ten of Czech households, where they performed so-called house searches, the result of which was several frightened children, ruined household equipment, rude and totally non-professional acting of the Police of the Czech Republic and false accusations of our friends. Today, after more than four months full of interrogations of the arrested, the police don’t have a single evidence of criminal activity. However, they’ve been detaining our friends in the Brno-Bohunice custody, far from their families and their friends.
Both of these political hunts have the only goal – to even more strengthen the dictatorship of this System, which is led by the Prime Minister, Jan Fischer, who “beats his chest”, claiming how amazingly successful he is in suppressing the growing right-wing opposition. The important fact is that the house searches and subsequent persecutions of our friends are absolutely illegal, inconsistent with moral, human as well as legal laws.
Reasons triggering the crackdowns include predominantly posting of bills and stickers, support of prisoners and organizing of music events. We consider all these reasons as absurd and absolutely non-logical in so-called democratic system. To put a young person in a prison for billposting is the height of primitive arrogance of the responsible authorities that should be impartial while keeping a watch on observance of law. They don’t act like this when it comes to different and often worse cases, which is really astonishing and indicative of corruption and of the fact that the authorities active in criminal proceedings are politically influenced.
